The General Binding Rules are a set of rules and regulations that govern Small Sewage Discharges of a Domestic Nature. Therefore, covering all homes with Septic Tanks and Sewage Treatment Plants.
It also covers some businesses such as pubs, hotels, or offices we can help you check if you are unsure if the legislation applies to you.
It all depends on what type of discharge point you have and the size of the output. There are also variations depending on the region you live within the UK.
Sounds a little complicated. But really the main aim is to prevent pollution from contaminated water entering our waterways. You must remember that it is your responsibility as the owner/operator to ensure your off mains sewage system complies with the relevant regulations.
You are classed as an ‘operator’ of a septic tank or small sewage treatment plant; if you own the property that uses the system, you own a property that shares a system with another property (you’re jointly responsible) or you have a written agreement with a property owner that says you are responsible for the maintenance of the system (e.g. if it’s in your tenancy agreement).
From 2020 it is no longer permitted for a septic tank to discharge directly to a water course. This is because the level of treatment is not considered of a high enough quality. Therefore, it is now enforced that owners with this type of system must make upgrades.
If you are selling a property with Off Mains Drainage you now have certain responsibilities: Please see our Moving House Section.
It doesn’t need to be daunting. If you are unsure of what applies to your system, give us a call we can help.
